While Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas (pictured) was wowing audience at this year’s Olympic Games in London with her gymnastic skills, a few spectator’s eyes were zeroing in on her ‘do.’

Now it seems that the “Flying Squirrel” has booked an appointment with New York City-based hairstylist to the stars Ted Gibson, according to The Daily Beat.

Since Douglas began her whirlwind television appearances recently, the look of her hair has changed for the better. The 16-year-old’s dark mane looks sleeker and has apparently been expertly coiffed, a look attributed to Gibson’s skilled hands. The stylist has worked with the likes of Gabrielle Union, Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway.

When Douglas’ hair was targeted during the games, critics took to Twitter and Facebook and viciously ripped the young girl’s hairstyle apart: the clips that held her hair in place, its coarse texture, the heavy brown gel she apparently used to keep her hair in place, the human hair ponytail she clipped on.

The social mediums were set ablaze with chatter about the state of Douglas’ hair.  Although she did have some people who had her back and lambasted the critics who focused on the triviality of her hairstyle, they still seemed to be outnumbered by those who were mean-spirited.

Gibson, who also was in awe of the history-making young girl, told the Daily Beast he could not understand the negative backlash about Douglas’ hair.

“I couldn’t believe it and still can’t. You have this young girl doing amazing things, and the conversation becomes about her hair? It was ridiculous and shameful. I believe all that talk had to take a toll on her … you’ve worked so hard for something and then people tear you apart for little or nothing,”

Gibson also noted that the majority of Douglas’ critics were African-American women whom he says tend to have issues with their hair.

“Women of color spend millions and millions of dollars on their hair to look good, so we know how seriously we take the issue of hair,” he says. “Oprah Winfrey told me once when I was on her show that ‘our hair is our crowning glory.’ I have to say I agree with Oprah.”

The stylist, who charges $950 per cut, was reportedly contacted last week by Douglas’ handlers. Gibson, who admits that he does not really have a teen clientele, finds it enticing to work with Douglas.

“It’s tricky because Gabby is 16 and I don’t want to do anything to make her look 25 years old.  Together with her vision, I hope we can create something that’s easy and looks great no matter what she’s doing or where she is’’ Gibson told the Daily Beast. While Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas (pictured) was wowing audience at this year’s Olympic Games in London with her gymnastic skills, a few spectator’s eyes were zeroing in on her ‘do.’  Now it seems that the “Flying Squirrel” has booked an appointment with New York City-based hairstylist to the stars Ted Gibson, according to the Daily Mail.
