Election day is a couple of weeks away, and while most people are paying attention to the presidential race at the top of the ticket, as well as some impactful localized races, Marylanders will also be voting on ballot questions regarding same sex marriage and gambling (Maryland may get another casino). As it relates to same sex marriage, gay marriage is favored among Maryland voters but no so much amongst African-Americans in the state. Support for the issue breaks down considerably for Black Marylanders who were polled.

According to a Post poll published today:

A ballot question on whether to uphold a state law allowing gay nuptials is favored 52 percent to 43 percent among likely voters, according to the poll, reflecting a long-term trend toward greater acceptance of gay unions that has included President Obama’s backing this year.

The poll also found that support leads among white Democrats—76 percent support marriage equality—while it lags among African Americans, who oppose the ballot question 53 percent to 42 percent. Republicans overwhelmingly find themselves in the opposition, while independents lean heavily towards legalizing same-sex marriage. Support his highest in Montgomery County—65 percent in favor—while opposition leads in neighboring Prince George’s County.

The poll is consistent with past polls that have found marriage equality in the lead. In May, a poll found support at 57 percent, while an August poll put it at 54 percent. Should marriage equality win on November 6, Maryland will become the first state in the country to legalize it at the ballot box.
