Family and friends of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher arrived at Upper Room Christian Church in Dix Hills , New York to pay tribute to the life of the 25-year-old man who killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, 22, before killing himself, reports the New York Daily News.

Many of the 300 attendees wore black and red — the Chiefs colors — to honor Belcher and some wore his No. 59 jersey.

“If I would have a lifetime wish or a dream come true, I’d pray to GOD with all my heart to change that day and bring back you,” Belcher’s devastated mother, Cheryl Shepherd, wrote in her son’s funeral program.

“A thousand words or questions won’t do it, this I know because I’ve tried. Not even a million tears will do it. I know this because I’ve cried,” Shepherd wrote.

Belcher’s service was open casket.

As previously reported by NewsOne, Belcher fired nine shots at the mother of his child after he returned home from a night of partying with another woman. Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, can be heard on a heartwrenching 911 tape begging the young woman to “stay with me.”

A photo slide show played at the end of the service, and the words “In Loving Memory of Kasandra Perkins” appeared on the screen, along with pictures of the couple’s 3-month-old daughter, Zoey.

“The legacy we pass on to her will be good,” said his uncle, Davin Miles.

Perkins’ funeral was held on December 6 and Kansas City Chiefs’ players were also in attendance, along with family and friends who spoke of her love for life and her daughter:

According to her great-uncle, Ted Downing, “She considered her daughter to be the love of her life.”

Belcher’s mother has temporary custody of Zoey, who will receive at least $1,000,000 over the course of the next 23 years.

After killing Perkins, Belcher kissed her on the forehead, kissed Zoey and exited the house. Before kneeling behind a car at Arrowhead Stadium and shooting himself in the head, he asked general manager Scott Pioli and team owner Clark Hunt to please take care of their daughter.
