Ok, hate is a strong word, especially this close to Dr. King’s birthday. But when you get three talents like Talib Kweli, Phonte and Elzhi on one track it makes it hard to tolerate paint-by-numbers by one-hit-wonders.  For this first cut from 9th Wonders’ upcoming “Jamla Is The Squad” compilation, the three wordsmiths put a Khrysis track into a figure-four and make it submit.

I’m sorry Talib, but lyrics still matter to me. I know you disagree but I could easily listen to an album of Khrysis instrumentals without any words, so the lyrics are more than a bonus here. They are the reason I keep rewinding. Since Te and Elzhi traded verses on LB’s “Hiding Places” and his own “Not Here Anymore” I’ve always felt they should do more together. Thank you Bass’d gods for granting my wish.

Phonte continues his trend of making me google banned substances with lines like, “We should have did this sh*t a long time ago/ Cause every single line, every rhyme I wrote/ Is nothing but that Schedule II opiates, stimulants; yea n***a, all kinds of dope.”

“No Competition” will appear on “Jamla Is the Squad,” which is hosted by Statik Selektah and is due to release January 28.

Make sure to also check out Talib’s performance and interview on TheUrbanDaily.com’s “MAIN STAGE” where he told us that folks don’t check for lyrics anymore.
