John Wall led his Washington Wizards team to victory Monday (Dec. 8) night after a tense contest with the Boston Celtics that went into double overtime. However, it was Wall’s emotional post-game interview that drew the most attention.

Wall befriended Miyah Telemaque-Nelson earlier this year, a young girl who was battling Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Wall arranged a social campaign for Miyah to help her meet Nicki Minaj, who donated one of her signature pink wigs. Wall and Miyah kept in touch, and even facetimed two weeks ago. As noted on the Washington Wizards’ Instagram page, little Miyah lost her battle with cancer Monday morning.

CSN basketball reporter Chris Miller pulled Wall to the side after the Wizards won, addressing the loss of Miyah at the top of the post-game interview. Wall was visibly emotional from the onset, trying his best to keep composure. Wall gamely tried to answer Miller’s questions, acknowledging Miyah’s passing. Before long, Wall bent over trembling in tears which prematurely ended the interview.

The Wizards seemed to have the game in the bag at one point with a 23-point lead, but allowed the visiting Celtics to creep back into the game towards the end of regulation. Wall and the Wizards dug deep in the overtime segments, winning on pure grit and hustle. At the close of the game, Wall finished with 26 points and 17 assists. Former Celtic Paul Pierce led the Wizards in scoring with 28 points, including a big three-pointer down the stretch to keep the team in the game.

Wall and the Wizards were able to get the big win for Miyah after all

Rest Powerfully In Peace, Miyah.
