Big Sean hit the sophomore slump and suffered the hip-hop stigma of getting killed on his own ish. Still, Mr. Anderson survived to create one of the most anticipated albums of Q1 in Dark Sky Paradise. The preceding singles have remained on playlist, the album itself has been receiving solid reviews, and now, there’s a freestyle to go with the hype. Big Sean decided to spend a night freestyling to “Me, Myself & I” — the slept-on Beyonce joint, not the De La Soul one.

G.O.O.D. Music’s good guy (this isn’t a freestyle, but a freestyle for the deserving you) has a release that somewhat summarizes Big Sean’s strength and flaws: nutty flows that never quite cross into gimmicky, a few punchline clunkers and your instant quotables. For the latter, you have your Kendrick Lamar dis (“Y’all bragging about so an so like oh he’s really it/ The new ni**a in rap, well can he really spit/ Or does he hide behind the skits like half of these rappers do?”) and the Internet pun “Looking for all the leaks, you know, Internet plumbers.”

It’s typical grown-up Big Sean, the form of Big Sean who’s always welcomed. This, the success of “IDFWU” and the impending success of Dark Sky Paradise (the Kanye West-featuring “All Your Fault” will do damage) will have many claiming Big Sean as the game’s Steph Curry: a man who rose from reliable contributor to feared MVP. But not quite. He’s yet to put out a project — or arguably a song — that’s as universally affecting and culture-shifting as some members of the Lamar List (Drake, Meek Mill, Jay Electronica). There’s not really a formula to do so, but the accomplishment here is how Big Sean convinces us he may at least have the tools. Plus, you can’t hate on the effort.
