Black twitter is outraged after former Cosby kid/Disney kid and now co-host of The View Raven Symone commented on judging people based on their names. See her response below. Now I’m not sure if she took an inside joke and thought it would be funny to say on the View, or if she really does feel this way, but considering she is the only young black woman with representation on that show, I think she missed a teachable moment for all of America to say that it’s not the name that should determine whether or not one gets an opportunity but the qualifications. She could have used that platform to educate and celebrate ethnic names but instead she reinforced stereotypes. I think we have all joked about creative names or our parents setting us up with names/spellings that people can’t pronounce, but in a moment like that, Raven could have been funny without furthering the idea that ones name or ethnicity has priority over actual ability and qualification. Check out Whoopi’s face too! I think Whoopi should have set her straight right then and there, but she was smart enough to know that its bad enough to have one black woman dissing her own…we don’t then need two black women fighting on the air. So she clutched her pearls and had the stuck face…I hope she schooled Raven back stage. Maybe Whoopi can give her some comedy lessons…that wasn’t comical..at all….
