White House Pays Homage to Ray Charles

President Barack Obama is known for belting out a few notes every now and then. During Wednesday’s Ray Charles tribute at the White House, he paid homage to the legendary musician by leading a sing-along with attendees. The show, which was the last installment of the “In Performance at the White House” series before Obama’s presidency comes to an end, featured performances by Usher, Jussie Smollett, Anthony Hamilton, Yolanda Adams, Andra Day, and others. Although the energy at the White House was electric, some of Charles’ children were upset they didn’t receive an invite. His ex-wife and two oldest children reportedly received invitations, but his nine other kids were snubbed. “We are what’s left of him and it’s as if we don’t exist,” said his youngest daughter Robyn Moffett. “It hurts to know that we are his family and we’re treated like outcasts.” Read more.

On Tuesday, the City Council announced that for the first time, they are majority Black. “I was excited — for the first time, there was a majority of African Americans on the council,” said Laverne Mitchom, who was sworn in to take the place of former Mayor Bryan Fletcher. “At the end of the day, white, black, whatever — we’re going to be here in Ferguson together…. We’ve got to do what’s best for all of us.” Despite the milestone, the city is still battling a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department. Read more.

When a person is running for president, their competitors and naysayers leave no stone unturned. Mitt Romney, who ran for president in 2012, claims that Donald Trump hasn’t released his tax returns yet because there is a “bombshell” within them. Trump says he will release his returns, but his accountants are still working on them. Romney also wants other Republican candidates Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio to release theirs as well. He believes that Trump has a chance at winning the Republican nomination and says there is “a slimmer and slimmer opening” for his competitors. Read more.

Abortion Clinics Are Closing at a Rapid Pace

As Republicans consistently push to eliminate abortion, clinics throughout the country have been closing their doors left and right; 162 abortion clinics closed and only 21 have opened since 2011.
