WASHINGTON – Metro’s bus and rail ridership declined in July 2009, compared with the 2008 figures, but it’s unclear if that is connected to concerns following the June 22 crash, the economic downturn or the decline in gas prices.

An analysis by the Washington Examiner found a 2.3-percent decline in rail ridership in July 2009, compared with 2008. That’s about 500,000 fewer trips on Metro. July’s decline, however, followed June’s 1.7-percent increase in rail ridership.

Metrobus ridership fell 4.1 percent in July, following a 1.6-percent decline in June.

The June 22 crash, the deadliest in Metro history, resulted in ongoing delays on Metro’s Red Line, the system’s busiest. Many customers also reported feeling more nervous about traveling by Metrorail, prompting some to consider driving.
