(Charlottesville, VA)  —  Just hours after a Charlottesville jury convicted George Huguely of second-degree murder and grand larceny in the death of ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, the panel recommended a sentence of 26 years.  The sentence includes 25 years for murder and one year for grand larceny.

During the trial, prosecutors said the 24-year-old Chevy Chase man killed Love in a drunken, jealous rage because he was angry about her alleged relationship with another lacrosse player.  The defense maintained Huguely did not intend to kill Love.  In final sentencing, the judge may follow the jury’s recommendation or lower the sentence, but it cannot be increased.
