South African Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius is being charged with the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius is an Olympic amputee and is known as the “blade-runner” because of the carbon-fiber blades he runs on.
According to investigators, Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times at around 3 a.m. Thursday at his house in Pretoria, South Africa with a 9 mm gun. Witnesses said before the shooting they heard arguing or shouting going on.
There have been other domestic abuse incidents at Pistorius’s home before. Pistorius denies that he murdered her and will try to beat the case.
He weeped trying to claim his innocence in court as he was being charged. Prosecutors say they will try to charge him with premeditated murder. If he is convicted of premeditated murder, he will serve life in prison.
The story that is being shaped by investigators will make it hard for Pistorius to beat this case. For now, he is in jail until the hearing.
We’ll have to see what other details come out and what defense Pistorius and his lawyers can come up with.
