The sentence hearing in Lauryn Hill‘s tax evasion case is rapidly approaching. Although she already plead guilty to the charges, Hill is still asking for the judge’s mercy when it comes to her sentence. Lauryn Hill maintains the reason she didn’t pay her taxes was because she felt her life as well as her family’s were being threatened.

The reclusive singer filed court documents begging for leniency. As we first reported, Hill neglected to file taxes in the years 2005-2007 despite earning upwards of $1.8 million. After pleading guilty to tax evasion, Hill, faces several years behind bars and is appealing to the court that she would be better able to pay back the delinquent taxes outside of prison.

According to documents, Hill stopped paying Uncle Sam his just due when she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family.” Lauryn Hill never goes into detail about the perceived threats on her life, but it does add to the various theories as to why Lauryn Hill withdrew from the public spotlight. Hill once claimed she went incognito to get back in touch with her musical roots.

We’ll find out if the judge will be merciful with Lauryn Hill’s sentencing on April 22nd.
