I know that some students are happy that summer school is invitation only, which is problem within itself.  But parents of the ones who weren’t “invited” t0 attend, want answers.

This summer, the DC school system will have a five week summer school program.  The program will provide math, science, and reading sessions for those who are enrolled.  The problem is not with the idea of schools being open during the summer, the problem comes into play when only certain students are being considered to receive this extra session of school.

Instead of the having students who are below grade level in the pragram, DC school will cater mostly to those who are only behind “a little bit”.  Since when is being behind a little bit, better than being behind a lot; behind is behind, period.  These sentiments are also shared with some DC parents, who students are apart of the below grade level group.  School officials are saying that there isn’t enough space for all the students who NEED the summer school sessions.

Although it seems as if school officials are to blame, there are some who want answers too.  One in particular, The chairman of the D.C. Council Education Committee, David Catania.  Cantania is baffled that there is not enough money to help all the students who are in need, and had decided to hold a committee meeting this Thursday to find a solution to this problem.

May be cliche’ but it is true, the children are our future, and if not trained the right way now, it may be too late when they become adults.  With an optimistic outlook on this situation, many hope summer school will be an open session instead of one to be invited to.
