Lyrics can be offensive just as they are dope. Rick Ross has experienced this, and now J. Cole and Drake also have a feeling on this matter.
Earlier this week, J. Cole penned an open letter regarding his lyrics in the song “Jodeci Freestyle”. “Jodeci Freestyle” is a song that J. Cole was featured on with Drake. Although the song is hot!, the line “I’m artistic, you n—-s is autistic, retarded”, by J. Cole, had those who support the fight against Autism raise their eyebrows.
Once J. Cole released his letter, Drake felt that it was only right for him to release one as well; especially with the fact that it is his song. Below is Drake’s letter, that he posted on his site :
J.Cole wrote a beautiful and moving apology to individuals and families affected by autism who were understandably hurt by a verse in “Jodeci Freestyle”. I share responsibility and offer my sincerest apologies for the pain this has caused. Individuals with autism have brilliant and creative minds, and their gifts should not be disparaged or discounted. This was a learning lesson for both of us, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to try to right this wrong. J. Cole and I believe that it is the right, responsible, and respectful decision to remove the lyric from the song.
A lot of artists have received backlash from their lyrics lately. We have seen both Rick Ross and Lil Wayne lose out in business and some fans, because of their lyrics in their songs. Although J. Cole doesn’t particularly agree with the “trend” of explaining the meaning of lyrics, he felt that an apology for his lyrics should be issued.
Drake says that he will remove the lyric from the song, even though it was released last month.
