Detroit rapper Eminem is back to dominating the charts with his hit single “The Monster” that boasts a Rihanna feature. Before a video for the song could be shot, the song hit number one on the charts. Finally, Eminem and Rih Rih have dropped the video for their latest collaborative hit.

In the visual for “The Monster,” Rihanna plays Em’s therapist and she shows him images from his past as random words show up on the screen. Eminem is shown clips from some of his controversial videos like “My Name Is..” and his 2001 Grammy performance with Elton John which came at the height of Em being hailed as rap’s most homophobic. Most of the scenes Rih Rih shows Eminem during their therapy session become part of the video ad Eminem recreates those moments for the video as well.

Intercut with Eminem in a therapy session and the recreated moments of his past, Eminem is seen performing on an elevator. the elevator takes Em to the top of a building where two armed guards are watching a cage with the old Eminem inside of it. The old Em throws ripped up pieces of paper at the new Eminem and the new Eminem picks up the paper, reads it and walks away. Yep, there’s a lot of symbolism about personal growth in here.
