The saga continues in the case of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who lost his life after being put in a chokehold by an NYPD officer. On Monday, a proceeding will be held in state Supreme Court, St. George, after there were requests to have Garner’s grand jury records released. Local leaders and organizations, including Public Advocate Letitia James, the Legal Aid Society, and the New York American Civil Liberties Union, have petitioned the court so that more information can be revealed regarding the grand jury decision, which includes releasing the transcripts. Initially, state Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Rooney ordered the release of some details regarding the case but wanted most of the information to remain concealed. “I would like to see transparency,” said Garner’s daughter Erica Garner during a Staten Island rally last month. “There’s stuff I want to know, like what’s in those documents. We deserve to know exactly what happened in the grand jury.” Justice William E. Garnett will preside over the hearing, which is slated to take place at 10:00 a.m. this morning. Read more.

Selma Natives Uneasy About Film

Although the movie “Selma” is sparking a lot of buzz, the film has received mixed reviews from those who live in the city that it is centered on. While many believe that the film, which depicts the heroic civil rights protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will generate positive attention for the city, others believe that it will harm its image. “I don’t know if the movie is going to help Selma’s image [in] the way it will be portrayed,” said Alston Keith Jr., a native of Selma. Local leaders believe that the film is important because it’s reflective of how far the city has come since the Civil Rights movement and it’s an integral part of the town’s history. “It’s important for us to tell this story,” said U.S. Representative Terri Sewell who is also Selma native. Next week those who live in Selma, Ala., will get the opportunity to see the Golden Globe-nominated film for free at the Selma Walton Theater. Read more.
