Police Commissioner Anthony Batts spoke to reporters and listed a total of 10 arrests that took place on Tuesday. Most of the arrests were linked to violations. One officer was also injured. The numbers are a huge difference from Monday evening, when police arrested 235 people and 20 officers were injured. Batts says of the curfew Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake enforced on Monday:
“The curfew is, in fact, working,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the community, with the citizens, with the residents.”
Batts says after the curfew went into effect Tuesday night, many people headed home – except for what he called “a group of criminals” who started a fire near Pennsylvania and North avenues – the same area where police were hit with bottles and bricks the day before.
On Tuesday, volunteers and people of the community came out to clear the debris and rubble from a destroyed local cash checking office, laundromat, and other areas. Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk stressed the good will of the city’s people in a statement to reporters shortly before Tuesday’s curfew took place.
“We saw what we’re used to in Baltimore, and that’s people coming together peacefully,” Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk told reporters later Tuesday night. He stressed that the curfew would be enforced, but he said, “We want people to see what Baltimore is, and it’s a peaceful city.”
Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Gregory Thornton confirmed schools would be open this morning after being closed on Tuesday. The canceled Orioles-White Sox game will take place on Thursday. While it was previously announced it would be open to the public, the team issued a press release stating the game is now closed.
