Comedian Eddie Murphy recently received one of the highest honors in comedy, the Mark Twain Prize For American Humor. The fact that he’s received this award is being overshadowed by his references to Bill Cosby.
In February, Eddie made headlines for turning down the opportunity to impersonate Cosby during the 40th anniversary episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL).
He said in an interview with The Washington Post, “There’s nothing funny about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. You’re hurting him. You’re hurting his accusers. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing.’”
Nine months later, Eddie’s “moment” was indeed about Cosby who previously received the Mark Twain Prize in 2009.
“Bill has one of these. Did you all make him give it back?” You know you’ve (expletive) up when they want you to give your trophy back” Eddie said.
He continued his speech with a Cosby impression “I would like to talk to some of the people who feel like I should give back some of my (expletive) trophies…You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in the people’s stomach … If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person I am going to try and kill this man!”
We wonder why Eddie has since had a change of heart? The veteran actor hasn’t done stand up in 29 years or a feature film since the 2012 box office flop, A Thousand Words with Kerry Washington.
Maybe he’s looking to make headlines as he re-enters the spotlight prior to the release of the highly anticipated Richard Pryor biopic in 2016 which also stars Mike Epps and Oprah Winfrey.
