The U.S. Justice Department filed a civil rights lawsuit against Ferguson, Missouri after the city declined a settlement to change its police department and court system from making arrests without probable cause against minorities.

The city knew that rejecting this agreement would resort to a lawsuit, and the Ferguson City Council voted 6 to 0. Major James Knowles III stated that “It will cost more to implement the agreement than it will be to fight a lawsuit. There’s no point in agreeing to something we can’t afford”, although it will cost more than the city has budgeted.

The deal called for Ferguson to pay for an independent monitor, receive new training for its police officers and gives raises to attract qualified applicants. In order to making the agreement that would require a tax increase for the residents, to which they could not afford.

We will see how this lawsuit plays out. How will it affect us? The residents of Ferguson?
