“It has been [alcohol, marijuana, pills, cocaine] at times,” Houston told Diane Sawyer in the now infamous 2002 ABC interview that delved headlong into her addiction struggles. “Nobody makes me do anything I don’t want to do. It’s my decision; the biggest devil is me. I’m my best friend and my worst enemy.”

In an eerie turn of events, Bobbi Kristina’s autopsy report from her July 2015 death was released by Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office on what would have been her 23rd birthday, this week.

The daughter of singers, Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston died from a lethal combination of drugs and drowning in her home bathtub that put her in an unconscious state for over six months. She was initially found her boyfriend, Nick Gordon.

What makes her death so shocking is that Bobbi Kristina died —for the most part— in a very similar fashion to her mother, who passed in March of 2012.

According to US Weekly, Bobbi died of “lobar pneumonia,” the result of “immersion of face in water complicating mixed drug intoxication.” In her system at the time of her drowning in January 2015 was marijuana, alcohol, benzoylecgonine (a cocaine-related substance), benzodiazepines (medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety) and morphine. “It could not be determined from toxicology tests whether the morphine resulted from heroin use,” the statement read.

Houston’s 2012 autopsy report revealed that she died from “drowning due to atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.” In addition to years of drug and alcohol abuse, Houston had atherosclerotic heart disease that’s essentially a build-up of plaque that narrows the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. The combination of drugs in her system that also included marijuana, alprazolam (found in Xanax), cycloebzaprine (muscle relaxation pill) and her heart disease ultimately lead to her demise in the bathtub of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

What can’t be ignored, is the prevalence of heavy drug use in Houston and her daughter’s life. While the immediately family has shied away from the fact, it is clear that professional treatment was needed to prevent their untimely deaths.

Adding fuel to the fire is Bobby Brown, who within hours of his daughter’s autopsy reveal, released a statement that he was it was “unsettling” that it was made public and still plans to press forward on his civil lawsuit and the criminal investigation to find if there was another party involved in her death.

Letting go is incredibly hard to do. Especially when you’ve lost two loved ones from drug and alcohol abuse. But we have a feeling closure will come once the family comes to grips with the nature of addiction and how denial of the problem often makes things worse.
