A German soccer team is being applauded for a controversial photo. Following a verbal and physical attack against two of it’s players who are former Sudanese refugees, the team posted a photo in blackface.
While it seems next to impossible to justify the use of blackface, the team’s spokesman Frank Sandmann is defending the image in saying, “This has nothing to do with racism, we just wanted to show solidarity.”
According to NBC, Emad Babiker was one of the Sudanese’s players who was severely beaten for no apparent reason.
“Emad was thrown to the ground. They struck and kicked him. When I saw him on Sunday, he had a big swelling under his eye,” said coach Sönke Kreibich.
The other African player, Amar Alnoor was only verbally assaulted. In response, the team posted the digitally altered photo on Facebook with the caption, “Violence against refugees is pathetic. Emad and Amar, you are one of us.”
Beauties, were there any other ways that the team could have stood in solidarity with the African players besides wearing blackface? Does the end justify the means?
