Earlier today, The Guardian posted an article about a school in New Zealand telling teenaged girls to “lengthen their skirts” in order to “stop distracting male teachers.”

“Around 40 students in year 11 at Henderson high school in Auckland were called to a meeting and told by deputy principal Cherith Telford that their skirts would need to be lowered to knee level, Newshub reports. Telford said the move was designed to “keep our girls safe, stop boys from getting ideas and create a good work environment for male staff”.

It’s popular rhetoric to tell younger women to “stop enticing men” as opposed to telling adult men to “stop raping.” Such is the world we live in, even though it puts girls and women in danger while seemingly letting men off the hook. One person that many were shocked to see speak on this, was Erykah Badu. Erykah, in some circles, is looked to as a “conscious” artist and role model by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of women around the world. She took to Twitter to air her opinions about the article and they caused quite a stir.

Some people think her comments make sense in context. Others vehemently disagree with her statements.
