Chicago Officer Sentenced For Trying To Rob A Drug Dealer

In a case that favors an episode of Law & Order, former Cook County sheriff’s officer Robert Vaughan has been sentenced to seven years in prison for trying to rob a federal agent disguised as a drug dealer. Vaughan and his domestic partner, Stanley M. Kogut, were also work partners and members of a police anti-drug task force. Beginning in 2011, the pair banked approximately $300,000 from confiscated drugs that they sold for cash. Following their arrest in 2014, Kogut hanged himself in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. During Vaughan’s sentencing U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan commented on the juxtaposition that the former officer’s life had become. “He became exactly that, a criminal — for greed, he did not need the money” said Der-Yeghiayan. The 45-year-old felon expressed remorse for his actions in saying, “I apologize to my family for putting them through this…I apologize to the people of Cook County for letting them down. I never intended to be on this side of the fence.” Chicago Sun-Times

Baseball Team Tries To Prevent Player From Overeating

Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval has been making headlines not for his athleticism but for his weight. Prior to the Red Sox, Sandoval played for the San Francisco Giants and the team took drastic measures in efforts to keep the portly player from overeating. “…They would make special arrangements at the hotel the Giants were staying in to not allow him to order room service,” said CSN reporter Sean McAdam on the Toucher & Rich radio show. “They would tell the front desk management, ‘If he calls down for room service at night after games, do not send anything to this room’” he added. In an interview with The Boston Herald, the player’s former trainer Ethan Banning compared Sandoval’s overeating to alcoholism. The 29-year-old Venezuelan native who has a $17 million salary was recently benched and placed on the disabled list because of a strained shoulder. NY Daily News

Agency Sued For Hiring An Alleged Sexual Predator To Work With Special Needs Students

Yakubu Abdulazeez was a staff member at The Christopher School in the Bronx. The facility, which runs under the parent company SCO Family of Services is a live-in residence which provides 24-hour care for children with developmental disabilities. The mother of a 14-year-old girl who was attending the school has filed a $5.1 million lawsuit claiming that Abdulazeez was sexually inappropriate with the teen. The unidentified victim has several disabilities including schizo-affective disorder, intermittent impulsive disorder and autism. Reportedly, a witness caught Abdulazeez in the room of the unidentified young woman who later confirmed the abuse. He’s since been terminated, arrested and charged with several misdemeanors including sex abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child. The lawsuit asserts that had the school done a thorough background check they would have known Abdulazeez, “had prior incidents regarding improper sexual contact, and/or physical contact with others.” A spokeswoman with SCO denied that Abdulazeez wasn’t given a proper background check.
