Dalian Atkinson of Aston Villa

Dalian Atkinson, a former soccer player for Premier League’s Aston Villa, died Monday morning after being tasered by police in the Telford area of England.

The Press Association is reporting Atkinson, 48, was pronounced dead about 90 minutes after being tased.

The police department involved in the incident released a statement after it occurred:

Officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1:30 a.m. this morning at an address in Telford. Upon arrival, Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3 a.m. West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure and will assist the IPCC with their inquires.”

According to reports, a resident named Paula Quinn saw what happened and remembers the Taser being fired after hearing shouting.

I stuck my head out the window to look out and I saw two police officers shouting at the gentleman and he sort of was stumbling towards them and the police officers warned him they would Taser him, but he just seemed a bit, perhaps, inebriated. And because he continued to step forward once or twice — non-threatening — they deployed the Taser,” she said.

Atkinson played for Aston Villa Football Club from 1991 to 1995, and played for several other clubs before retiring on 2001.

His death is currently being investigated.
