August Wilson is one of America’s most cherished and respected writers. He was a playwright, whose most famous piece is “Fences,” which just received a 2016 screen adaptation directed by Denzel Washington, who also starred in it opposite Viola Davis. Wilson’s work is known for its beautiful and painfully real poetic depictions of black life in America.

I had the chance to travel to Colorado Springs with Arts In The Armed Forces, an organization founded by “Star Wars” actor Adam Driver, who is also a military veteran. Alongside the esteemed company of actors Ray Anthony Thomas, Tracie Thoms, Mykelti Williamson, Mamoudou Athie, Charlie Barnett and Leon Addison Brown, we performed a reading of “Fences” to cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The experiences reminded me further about the magic of the arts. But more importantly, it highlighted the significance of using ones talents and passions to honor the ordinary folks, who deserve to be remember just as much as the extraordinary ones.
