This is great news!

In June, there were 13 District of Columbia Public School that closed.  One of those schools that were in the 13, was M.C. Terrell-McGogney Elementary.  M.C. Terrell-McGogney Elementary is located on Wheeler Rd., near the Congress Heights neighborhood.  Although the elementary school was closed, it will reopen for the next school year, and serve as a charter school!

M.C. Terrell-McGogney Elementary is now a charter school, known as Somerset Preparatory Academy Public Charter School.  The charter school will house students in sixth through eight grades, and is expected to enroll 200 students for the 2014 school year.  Somerset Preparatory Academy Public Charter plans to expand, and serve up to 800 students all the way up to the 12th grade.

Although this is exciting news, parents of the students who attended the school before it became charter, are upset.  Their frustration comes from them being told by Chancellor Kaya Henderson, of  M.C. Terrell-McGogney Elementary, that the school was NOT going to be made charter.

Gray officials plan to lease a dozen long-term leases to charter schools including M.C. Terrell-McGogney Elementary.
