The MTA wrote up a motorman who joined in on the annual “No Pants Subway Ride” in New York City on his day off in January, according to the New York Daily News.

Christopher Chase (pictured) not only took part in the popular improv event where participants ride the subway in their undergarments, he posted a picture of himself in briefs to his Facebook page. That didn’t sit well with the MTA, which wrote Chase up for “conduct unbecoming,” per documents the News acquired.
Chase strongly disagreed with the decision. “I think it’s stupid,” he said. “I don’t see the point in making such a big deal over nothing. I wasn’t on duty or in uniform or anything like that, and it was a public event.”
A supervisor reprimanded Chase and made him promise, in writing, that he would not engage in any more behavior that could damage the MTA’s reputation, he claims. The nine-year employee received re-instruction on the authority’s code of conduct, the documents further revealed. A co-worker also complained that Chase showed too much leg in his Facebook photo.

“We received a complaint and had to look into it,” MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said. Though Chase was written-up for his conduct, he was not disciplined, Ortiz added.
Members of TWU Local 100 are demanding references to the event be removed from Chase’s personnel file, calling the writeup “plainly unreasonable” and a violation of free speech.
The rule Chase reportedly violated mandates employees “avoid behavior which would tend to create adverse criticism of the Authority or of the System. Their conduct, whether on or off duty on System Property, is required to be such as to merit the confidence and respect of the public and their superiors.”
“I didn’t think it would be a big deal,” Chase said, noting he participated during his vacation.
Should Chase have been written up? Let us know.
