It looks like Dr. Ben Carson may be the first candidate to throw himself into the ring for the 2016 Presidential race.

No official announcement has been made just yet, but there are rumblings that the retired neurosurgeon and former BET Honor recipient could announce his decision to run for the White House in the coming days.

He recently quit his on-screen gig at FOX News; this is significant because under the rules of how to operate a campaign, candidates must get an equal amount of camera time during a campaign. Giving up his job at FOX might be his way of ensuring that he adheres to that very rule.

Ben said in a statement that is exit from FOX was motivated by his need for “complete independence to fully examine my options.” He also told ABC News that he was seriously considering a run for office because so many people are “clamoring” for him to be the next president.

He also aired a documentary “A Breath of Fresh Air: A New Prescription for America” this weekend. ABC News reports that the film, which Xfinity categorized as paid programming, aired in 22 states and gave some background on Ben’s career. This could also have served to introduce him to his prospective constituency.
