Talk show mavens, Whoopi Goldberg (pictured) and Rosie O’Donnell, who co-host the ABC-TV show “The View,” rolled up their sleeves and got into an on-air screamfest over the topic of racism in this country. The ladies’ volume turned-up when co-host Rosie Perez and guest-co-host “Orange Is The New Black’s,” Laverne Cox both agreed that it is definitely racist when black folks are followed around in department stores.
Goldberg argued that incidents like racial profiling in stores are not racist but ignorant. Goldberg then offers the following as her definition of racism, “You need to know what real racism is. Racism is when someone comes up to you and says, ‘I hope you f—king die. That’s racism,” she heatedly contends.
In a mind-boggling definition of what racism means to Goldberg, she tries to convey its true definition. “I’ve been black for 60 years. For me, stupidity, there are dumb folks who just say dumb stuff because they’re not looking or paying attention to the person they’re talking to which is why people could walk up to Obama and not look up at him and see that it’s the president.”
Perez, who is Puerto Rican, vehemently disagreed with Goldberg and offered this unfortunate scenario to underline what true racism means, “When my sister Carmen and I were in San Antonio — we were in an exclusive hotel, we’re in exclusive VIP lounge, there are millions of people, right? We walk in and they asked my sister Carmen to clean the table.”
When Goldberg questioned, if Perez’s experience was in fact a valid definition of racism, O’Donnell could not hold her tongue in any longer and told her African-American co-host, “I’m a gay American whose been called an [expletive],” O’Donnell said, acknowledging in a raised voice that she totally gets racism. “I have a black kid I raised Whoopi! I have a kid in my house!”
Goldberg of course came back at O’Donnell inferring that her experience with racism can’t be compared. O’Donnell then let it be known to al within listening range and in her highest octave that “You don’t need to be black to know what racism is!”
Watch the madness here.
