James Holmes has been found guilty of first-degree murder after shooting up a Colorado movie theater, which killed 12 people, and injured 70 others.

According to the New York Times, a jury deliberated the verdict for 13 hours over the course of two days, leading them to reject his defense lawyer’s pleas that he had a severe mental illness at the time of the shooting. His legal team believed that he was not legally responsible for his actions on July 20, 2012.

The site reports:

The decision was delivered in Arapahoe County District Court after 10 weeks of testimony from more than 250 witnesses. They included survivors whose friends and family were killed, psychiatrists who offered contrasting views of Mr. Holmes’s mental state, and his former classmates from the University of Colorado whose memories of him as an introverted, awkward young man belied the armor-clad gunman who walked into the theater and started shooting.

The guilty verdict against Holmes comes within days of the tragedy’s third-year anniversary, but there is still more of a trial to be done to determine whether he will receive the death penalty.

The district attorney in suburban Arapahoe County is seeking the death penalty for Holmes, and the jury will be the ones to determine whether he will receive it, or go to prison for life.
