Donald Trump says he will no longer honor his pledge to support the eventual Republican pick for president.

After vowing to support the eventual Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz appeared to back down from the pledge during a Tuesday night town hall broadcast on CNN, according to NBC News.

Honestly he doesn’t have to support me,” Trump said of Cruz. “I’m not asking for his support. I want the people’s support.

The candidates’ divergence comes after weeks of sparring on social media amid accusations of philandering, name-calling, and nasty comments about their wives.

From NBC News:

When pushed again by moderator Anderson Cooper about whether he’d respect the so-called “Loyalty Pledge” a stage full of then-candidates agreed to during the very first GOP debate in Cleveland last August, Trump was more direct: “No, I don’t anymore. No. We’ll see who it is. And he was essentially saying the same thing.”

Cruz has been more slowly backing away from the pledge for the last week after Trump retweeted a supporter who attacked the appearance of Heidi Cruz compared to Melania Trump.

“I’m not in the habit of supporting someone who attacks my wife and attacks my family,” Cruz said on the stage in Milwaukee. “I think that is going beyond the line. They don’t belong in the attacks. And, listen, I’m not an easy person to tick off, but when you go after my wife, when you go after my daughters, that does it.”

The two men and Ohio Gov. John Kasich appeared decidedly focused on the issues, including national security, health care, and the economy. Trump also stood firm in defense of his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who was charged Tuesday with simple battery after allegedly attacking a former Breitbart reporter at an event earlier this month in Jupiter, Florida.

Next week, early primary voters head to the polls in Wisconsin.

Despite their differences, do you think Trump and Cruz should keep their pledge to support the eventual Republican presidential nominee?
