WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s personal life seems to be overshadowing her basketball career. On Sunday, several cyber bullies took to Twitter to wish the Phoenix Mercury star a Happy Father’s Day. In 2015, 25-year-old Griner divorced her wife Glory Johnson while Johnson was carrying the couple’s twins. Johnson gave birth in October, through a surrogate, and a judge ordered that Griner pay child support for both children. The twins don’t share the same DNA as Griner. “@brittneygriner you are a stud. You are black. You pay child support. Happy Father’s Day ma’am. ??” tweeted one user. Frustrated by the comments, Griner posted a tweet in an effort to silence her critics. “Every [one] plz chill with the Happy FD s–! Tell your own dads cuz I’m not one,” she wrote. Some of her fans spoke out and defended her. “Really? People trolling Brittney Griner today, but just last week they were praying for the LGBT community? I swear people are just dumb!!,” posted one user. Read more.
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers Win the 2016 NBA Finals
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers made history on Sunday evening by coming out victorious against the Golden State Warriors, ultimately winning the 2016 NBA Finals. The win marked the first time in 52 years the Cavaliers have won an NBA Championship. The Cavs also became the first team in NBA history to bounce back from a 3-1 NBA Finals deficit. James led his team with 27 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds in the 93-89 win. “I’m true to the game, and I know what I bring to the table. I came back for a reason. I came back to bring a championship to our city. I knew what I was capable of doing. I knew what I learned in the last couple years that I was gone, and when I came back, I knew I had the right ingredients and the right blueprint to help this franchise get back to a place that we’ve never been. That’s what it was all about,” said James. “The game always gives back to people that’s true to the game. I’ve watched it. I know the history of the game, and I was just calm. I was calm. I was focused. I was locked in.” James also took home the Finals MVP trophy. The championship parade is slated to take place in Cleveland on Wednesday. “It’s going to be the biggest party that Cleveland has ever seen ever,” said James. Read more.
Letters Written by President Obama’s Father Found in Harlem
Letters penned by President Barack Obama’s late father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., have been found by an archivist in Harlem. The letters were discovered at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in 2013, but the findings were reported on Saturday. The documents capture the essence of Obama Sr.’s journey from Kenya to the University of Hawaii and Harvard University. He wrote about securing funds from U.S. universities and foundations so that he could attend school. “It has been my long cherished ambition to further my studies in America,” he wrote in 1938. The letters also capture his experience in America and how the culture is different from Africa. Barack Hussein Obama Sr. married President Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, as a student in Hawaii. He already had a wife and two children back in Kenya prior to getting involved with Dunham. Obama Sr. was barely involved in President Obama’s life. He moved back to Kenya when the president was 3 years old and saw him once again when he was 10. President Obama wrote about his relationship with his dad in the memoir Dreams of My Father. “He never managed that leap as well as he could have and part of the process of me writing the book was to figure out what happened to him and how did he become who he was,” said Obama. Senate to Vote on Gun Control Laws
Following the Orlando shooting, the senate is slated to vote on new gun control laws. However, the chances of making effective change remain slim to none. On Monday evening, the senate will vote on four proposed bills; two that were presented by Republicans and two presented by Democrats. The divide in Congress will most likely make reaching a decision difficult. According to polls, many Americans believe that there is a major need for gun safety reform, but the Democratic Party hasn’t been able to effectively implement laws due to the NRA’s influence. “Laws didn’t stop them in Boston. Laws didn’t stop them in San Bernardino, where you had every type of gun control law that you could have. And they didn’t stop them in Paris, where people can’t even own guns,” said NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. Republicans believe that the two laws proposed by Democrats blocks the constitutional rights of gun owners and many Democrats believe that the laws supported by Republicans won’t effectively control the selling of guns. TV One to Debut Another Original Film
After seeing success from its first original film, Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story, TV One is gearing up to debut another film. The network’s latest project is titled Bad Dad Rehab, and stars Malik Yoba, Rick Gonzalez, Robert Ri’chard, Rob Riley, and Wesley Jonathan. The film is centered on men who go to rehab to develop better parenting skills after running into issues with the mothers of their children. Yoba plays the founder of the “Bad Dad Rehab Program,” and leads the men in bettering their relationships with their children. The film was picked up from 2015 American Black Film Festival Screenplay Competition winner Keronda “Kiki” McKnight. “Movies like this don’t come around often where you see the many complexions of fatherhood,” said D’Angela Proctor, SVP, Original Programming & Production, TV One. “Many people think that being a deadbeat dad is connected to money, but it’s not. Fatherhood is about presence and not presents and we see that in this movie.” The film is being directed by Carl Seaton and produced by Roger M. Bobb and Angi Bones from Bobbcat Films. Bad Dad Rehab will air on TV One on July 3, at 7 pm ET and 9 pm ET. Read more.
