A Texas sheriff deputy was recently fired after he admitted to getting drunk and firing his duty gun into the air and into a church because he was angry over the killings of five police officers in Dallas. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

According to Fox 4 Dallas News, on July 13, Ovilla, Texas, police responded to a 911 call that said shots were fired. When the authorities arrived they found Sommervell County Sheriff’s Deputy William Cox, shirtless, crying and drunk in the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church parking lot. Cox, 27, confessed to the shooting saying that because was he distressed over the July 7 police ambush, he got drunk and needed to let off steam by shooting his gun.

A body cam video shows Cox telling police that he fired the shots “[because] my boys are getting killed in Dallas” and how “the black c–n started killing my boys.

Cox was arrested and charged with deadly conduct, but the charges were dropped because the pastor of the church, who also knows Cox’s family, signed an affidavit of non-prosecution, saying “it’s all about forgiveness,” Fox 4 noted. But Ellis County District Attorney Patrick Wilson isn’t happy with this outcome, claiming that this slap on the wrist reeks of favoritism especially given that Cox used to work as a jailer in Ellis County.

“This, in my mind, is a tremendous abuse of that discretion. And in today’s climate, it’s inexcusable. I cannot understand how these facts escape the narrative of favoritism,” Wilson stressed.

The criticism being lobbed against law enforcement and the criminal justice community in general in our community and our society today the foundation of that criticism is what’s illustrated in this case,” he added.  “And that is favoritism that some people in the criminal justice system get treated differently. How can I dispel that narrative when these facts completely support that?”  Wilson asked.

He’s got a really good point.

Wilson also questioned why when Fox 4 News asked the authorities to send them Cox’s mugshot, they were sent a picture of a blank wall instead.

“Here’s another former Ellis County Sheriff’s Office currently working in a different sheriff’s department when he was booked into your jail. Here’s the chief of the Maypearl Police Department who was arrested and booked into your jail. All of their damn pictures are on your system,” Wilson said.

The good news is the Sommervell County Sheriff’s Office terminated Cox immediately, but once again the double standard of what police officers like Cox can get away when putting actual lives in danger compared to what happened to Tamir Rice for having a toy gun, is a very bitter pill to swallow.
