Many Americans knew that Donald Trump‘s surprise presidential victory would cause drastic changes in the country, but no one knew for sure just how extreme.

Reports of hate crimes–especially regarding race–saw a spike all over the United States after Trump won the election, but New York City in particular saw a huge 115 percent increase, Philly reports. Mayor Bill de Blasio says he believes heated rhetoric by Trump is a factor.

The Mayor spoke out at a news conference on Monday, saying, “You can’t have a candidate for president single out groups of Americans, negatively, and not have some ramifications for that. It’s obviously connected to the election.” He added, “We could lose lives because of this. It’s more more complicated than that. It’s not linear. Do I blame Donald Trump for using hate speech during his campaign? Absolutely. He did. It’s a fact.”

According to the NYPD, there have been at least 43 bias-related attacks since the election, compared to 20 during the same period of time last year.
