Wha Gwaan? This Jamaican Patois Speaking Baby Doll Is Everything
The first Jamaican patois speaking baby doll was launched by Saffron Jackson, a U.K. teacher, and is clearly a need in the toy market.
Saffron created the doll, which was released in November, after having difficulty finding a Black doll for her daughter, “All the black dolls I have seen were from America, and most of them were either ugly or not to my liking. I thought, why not create my own doll?”
…so she did.
In November, Toya, the Jamaican patois speaking baby doll went on the market. When you squeeze Toya, she responds with one of four phrases:
“Wah gwaan?” (What’s up?)
“Wha happen?” (What’s happening?)
“Weh yaa seh?” (How are you doing?)
“Me name Toya, and me a wah Zuree Doll from the beautiful island of Jamaica.” (My name is Toya and I’m a Zuree Doll from the beautiful island of Jamaica.)

Since the launch, Saffron has received over 400 orders and almost 4K likes on Facebook. She’s well on her way to building a lasting brand!
Saffron’s goal is to help young girls’ see the beauty in themselves via representation. In an interview with The Star, a Jamaican newspaper, she expressed, “The idea behind this is to show little girls that regardless of their skin tone or hair texture, they’re indeed beautiful.”
Saffron even named the company, Zuree, which is Swahili and means beautiful.
So cute!
You can find the dolls, here.
