Netflix released a captivating teaser for a Simone Biles documentary titled, “Simone Biles Rising.”

Documenting the life of an iconic athlete, it only makes sense to have the iconic voice of Viola Davis narrate the upcoming film. Davis has been a fan of Biles since the 2021 Olympics. “Always a champion. Always a gamechanger, a rule breaker. Always a consummate teammate…..a bastion of support….You have shifted the sport and reminded us what it means to be HUMAN…and because of all this…you will be remembered,” Davis wrote in a social media post during that season.

Throughout the film, Biles gets candid about her mental health and all she endured during the 2020 Tokyo Games. While the lows are explained, the highs are also highlighted as talk of the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris is discussed.

Davis is heard throughout the teaser reciting one of Biles’ favorite poems by the late Maya Angelou, “Still I Rise.” It’s a poem that tells a story the gymnast can deeply relate to — rising above adversity despite the expectations others had set for her. It’s been three years since Tokyo, and despite her moving forward in life, not everyone has followed suit.

The documentary allows Biles the opportunity to let others in and give a glimpse of what she’s risen above these past couple of years, from Tokyo Games to getting married, and now preparing herself for the upcoming games in Paris.

“Simone Biles Rising” premieres on Netflix on July 17.
