When it comes time for the NBA to hand out the NBA trophy, the acceptance speeches are notorious for bringing these big hulking players to tears. Well, this year’s MVP Kevin Durant cried his eyes out, but made sure everyone in the room cried right along with him. Durant accepted his MVP Award trophy  and honored his teammates and his mother.

The Oklahoma City Thunder small forward spoke eloquently as tears of joy flowed. He called out each one of his teammates and let them know how each of them have contributed to his success. The most touching of the teammate tributes is when Durant pays homage to Derek Fisher. Fisher has been in the NBA for 17 seasons and Durant praised him for still having the spirit of wanting to learn. Kevin told Fish, as he called him, that seeing how enthusiastic he is about getting better at his game inspired Durant in ways we can’t imagine.

If people were dapping tears away when Kevin addressed his Thunder brothers, they were full on crying when Durant addressed his mother Wanda Pratt. Pratt watched on like the proud mother she is as her son told the crowd about how they were forced to move from apartment to apartment because they were poor.

“Single parent with two boys by the time you were 21 years old. Everybody told us we weren’t supposed to be here. We moved from apartment to apartment by ourselves. One of the best memories I had was when we moved into our first apartment. No bed, no furniture, and we just all sat in a room and just hugged each other. We thought we’d made it,” he said.

Pratt worked as a postal worker in order to put food on the table. Though the long hours kept her away from home a lot, she was always involved in her children’s lives. She pulled Kevin back when it seemed like she might lose him to the streets. For that and other things, Kevin Durant will forever love his momma.

After watching his acceptance speech, go call your mother. She deserves to know how much you appreciate the sacrifices she’s made for you.
