Renowned scholar Marc Lamont Hill (pictured center) is defending Floyd Mayweather (pictured left), after rapper and former friend 50 Cent (pictured righ) issued a reading challenge to the boxer.
50 Cent recently issued the ALS Reading Challenge via Instagram to Mayweather, writing:
“If you can read one full page of a Harry Potter book, n***a, I’ll give $750,000 to whatever charitable organization you want [me to] to.”
50 then throws a bucket of ice over his outdoor seating area, referencing the massively popular ALS #IceBucketChallenge. Shortly after the video, Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” aired a segment of the boxing legend struggling to read an announcement on their show.
Hill recently tweeted the following about the ongoing episode:
Hill also noted that publicly shaming Mayweather will do nothing to help him:
Hill then added that he called out 50 Cent so people would stop making fun of literacy-challenged people:
Another reason why it may not be a laughing issue is because crime and illiteracy are related. Per the Department Of Justice, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure.” More than 70 percent of inmates read at a fourth-grade level.
