Amandla Stenberg

Don’t ever let anyone say that social media can’t change the world. The #BlackLivesMatter movement has been a tidal wave of news, pictures, tweets, articles, and protests for two to three years now. While it’s permeated almost every facet of media, the movement “hitting” the big screen is still in its infancy. Amandla Stenberg might be on the edge of changing that as she’s set to star in an adaption of the unreleased YA novel by Angela Thomas“The Hate You U Give.”

“According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amandla will play a 16-year-old girl named Starr who attends a suburban prep school while growing up in a poor neighborhood. Starr sees her best friend get shot by a police officer, causing her to question the two very different worlds of which she’s become a part.”

This is big news. Hollywood has a diversity problem. The diversity isn’t solely based on casts, but the type of stories black people get to tell. Amandla is popular on Twitter for her discussions on feminism, racism, and sexism, so this part fits potentially fits her to a “T.” There’s plenty of ways this movie can go and a litany of issues that can be addressed. The expectations and excitement for this movie will likely be sky high. One just hopes it can deliver.
