At Least 26 Dead After Second Earthquake Strikes Kyushu, Japan
A second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck the island of Kyushu in Japan early Saturday morning, killing at least 26 people. This same region was struck by another earthquake just 28 hours earlier, killing 9 people.
The Wall Street Journal reports, “Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the latest deaths brought the total toll from the series of quakes to 35. Approximately 90,000 people evacuated their homes in Kumamoto prefecture, where both quakes were centered, Mr. Suga said.“
Today’s quake hit a bigger area than the first one. The city of Kyushu closed its airport and all flights have been cancelled. The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning shortly after the quake.
