There appears to be some good news coming from the ongoing Black Lives Matter protest and it involves one of its central activists.

DeRay McKesson has a reason to celebrate because he was just offered a highly respected position with the Baltimore Public Schools system.

As reported by The Root, vocal Black Lives Matter activist McKesson was appointed to the position of Chief Human Capital Officer.

On Tuesday, the schools CEO Sonja Santelises named McKesson the second and most high-profile officers. She states, “He has the depth of knowledge of the system, and he has proved that he can lift the work in a short amount of time,” Santelises said. “And he has proven his dedication to the children of Baltimore.”

Meanwhile, McKesson seems to be very happy with his new position and all of the responsibility that comes with it. In his official statement, he said, “At its core, this role is about finding great people, matching them to the right role, and helping them to develop and experience careers in the service of our kids. I am excited to return to city schools … and to continue doing the work to ensure that every child in Baltimore City receives a world-class education.”

Unfortunately, after the news of his new position and its accompanying high-paying salary was released to the press, some were critical of just how much McKesson will make. He is slated to earn a $165,000 annual salary, managing a budget of $4 million and 56 employees.

Perhaps expecting some of the criticism of McKesson’s appointment, Santelises explained her reasoning behind hiring him. She pointed to his experience in overseeing key reforms as a strategist and special assistant in the Baltimore Human Capital Office. McKesson is expected to head the office at least through the fall. It has not been decided if the appointment will be a permanent one.
