Chaka Khan Checks Into Rehab For Prescription Painkiller Abuse

Legendary singer and 10-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan has dropped out of her scheduled performance at the California State Fair to seek help at a rehab center for drug addiction.

Fair officials received a message from Khan’s representative Saturday, stating that the singer was entering into an addiction rehabilitation and aftercare program for help with a prescription pain medication addiction, said Sabrina Rodriguez, a Cal Expo spokesman.

The 63-year-old was supposed to appear at the event on Monday night but pulled out of the gig, and every remaining show booked in July. Roughly 400 people purchased tickets for Khan’s State Fair concert. According to Rodriguez, those individuals will receive an automatic refund within a week.Khan has had an on-again-off-again struggle with drug and alcohol abuse dating back to the 80’s. She became clean of cocaine and heroin in the early 90’s, and battled alcoholism until in 2005 when she declared herself sober.

It should be noted that Chaka was very close friends with the late Prince, who also struggled with prescription drug abuse leading up to his death in April.
