AOL Build Speaker Series - D.L. Hughley, 'Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years'

D.L. Hughley has not been afraid to speak his mind when it comes to the anger and pain he has felt since the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.

He appeared on Fox News to speak with Megyn Kelly and blasted her for being a racist as the two traded jabs live on air. The conversation began rather politely but as the two began to disagree over the investigation following Michael Brown‘s death in 2014, Hughley sarcastically said, “The only place that racism doesn’t exist is Fox News and the police department.”

Kelly was shocked. “That’s insulting,” she said. “You just insulted millions of people watching this channel.”

To which Hughley responded, “Well, I’m insulted by the things on hear on this netwrok. So we’re even.” Adding, “I could care less about insulting people that insult me on a daily basis.”

The back and forth did cool down, but Hughley added, “I believe there’s a benefit of the doubt that’s given to police officers that’s not given to anybody else,” Hughley said. Adding, “I don’t know a Black man that hasn’t had a run-in with a police officer, from the highest to the low…So my perception of this is based on the experience that I’ve had, just like yours are. So I am not willing to give them [the police] that benefit of the doubt.”

To that, Kelly remarked, “It’s very dangerous when you get to the point where you paint an entire group with the same brush based on the bad actions of a few people.”

Noting the irony of this, Hughley said, “That is amazing to hear on this network, that really is.”

He was going to continue his thoughts, but before he could Kelly cut off the interview. Hughley knew that when he accepted an invitation to appear on Fox he might be in for a fight, and he definitely did not shy away from it, putting Kelly, and the entire network, in their place.
