Baltimore officers fatally shot a man on Thursday evening who fired at them with an “AR-15-style” rifle, NBC News reports.
Department spokesperson T.J. Smith told NBC News a motive was unavailable at the time of reporting. The names of the responding officers and the suspect were not made public.
According to NBC, no officers or civilians were injured in the shooting that took place in an apartment complex around 9:30 p.m. The pursuit began when four nearby officers in plainclothes approached the building after hearing shots.
Once the officers exchanged fire with the suspect, the man retreated further into the building, where investigators assumed he was hit. During a search, the responding officers found the gun in a tree line behind the building and the suspect on the second floor with at least one bullet wound on his upper body. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward to aid in their investigation. Smith told reporters at a news conference that the department was looking further into a “theory” that the suspect tried to lure officers to the area with gunfire.
