Chief Cook County Judge Timothy Evans swore in Kim Foxx on Thursday as the county’s first Black female state’s attorney, NBC News Chicago reports.
Foxx, who grew up in the Cabrini Green housing project, described that moment as the “journey of a lifetime” in her speech.
The Democrat steps into her new role with the Chicago Police Department under a federal probe by the Justice Department to “determine whether there are systemic violations of the Constitution or federal law by officers of CPD.”
In her comments, Foxx stated that there’s a sense in Chicago, and indeed across the nation, that “hopelessness reigns.” She vowed to address that with a culture shift of “transparency and justice.” Her recipe for change will include meeting face-to-face with angry residents, NBC reported.
The Chicago Sun Times said Foxx told reporters that she also plans to review recent police involved shootings. “We’ve had a structure in place for decades that had not ensured accountability,” she stated.
