Fairfax, VA Teen Named ‘TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year’
15-year-old Virginia student, Heman Bekele is officially ‘TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year’ after he developed a compound-based bar of soap designed to treat skin cancer.

Growing up in Ethiopia, Heman Bekele became interested in skin cancer very young. “When I came to America, I realized what a big problem the sun and ultraviolet radiation is when you’re exposed to it for a long time,” and took this realization to focus on affordable and accessible alternatives to skin cancer treatment.
At as young ar 4 years old, Bekele used his curiosity to make a difference. “They were just dish soap, laundry detergent, and common household chemicals,” he told TIME.
The Arlington native recently won the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Congrats to ‘TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year’, The DMV’s very own Heman Bekele!
