Superproducer Kanye West has made a name for himself as a producer with an affinity for sped up soul samples. His love for sampling has recently gotten him sued by the family of a deceased singer-songwriter.

David Pryor is responsible for writing the 1974 song “Bumpin’ Bus Stop” which he performed with his band Thunder & Lightning. When Pryor passed, his two children each inherited a quarter of the song. According to them, Kanye West sampled 13 seconds of the song in his huge 2005 hit “Gold Digger.” Allegedly you can hear the sample of David Pryor saying “Get down” in the background when Kanye sings, “Get down, girl. Go ‘head get down.”

In what is being looked at as strange, Pryor’s children want to stop the sale of the song. It’s weird because the song has been out for eight years. They’re also looking to be compensated handsomely because of the unauthorized sample.

Whose side are you on?
