ebola-virus

The New York doctor that tested positive for Ebola has gotten a clean bill of health, and he’s due to be released from the hospital tomorrow.

After nearly two weeks in isolated treatment at Bellevue Hospital in New York, Craig Spencer is now Ebola-free. The New York Times reports that he will be leaving the facility on Tuesday, when he’s also scheduled to speak at a press conference.

Craig was admitted to the hospital on October 23 after returning home from serving in Guinea, where he’d treated Ebola patients as part of Doctors Without Borders. He’d originally been brought to Bellevue with a fever of 100.3 degrees; later that day he’d tested positive for Ebola after being placed in isolated care.

Once it was confirmed that he had the virus, authorities scrambled to find anyone that he’d been in close contact with prior to his diagnosis. Ebola can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids from a patient who has begun to show symptoms. In the days before he went to the hospital, Craig could have exposed hundreds of people to the virus. He’d been out and about in public as he went bowling, dined out, rode on the subway and took an Uber taxi.

Right now, his fiancée has been placed in isolation as well. There’s no word on whether Craig will go back to their apartment because that is where she is currently being held in quarantine. It’s also unclear whether their resident has even been decontaminated.

Craig may announce his housing plans at the press conference tomorrow, but he may simply be focusing on his good health at this time. He’d been in serious condition at one point during his treatment, but by last week he was well on his way to a full recovery. Doctors used a number of different treatments on Craig, including an infusion of plasma from another U.S. patient that had recently beaten Ebola named Nancy Writebol.
