Frustrated mixed race student working in classroom

We’ve all answered math questions with off-the-wall answers in lieu of putting in the work to solve the equation, but one young girl may have outsmarted us all.

Iowa fourth grader Maddy Douglas recently refused to answer a math problem in her Common Core homework because it broke “girl code.” Similar to bro code, the rule says that one shall never date a friend’s ex – a sentiment that should also be followed in hip-hop, but that’s another story.

The math question asked the students to figure out the amount of combinations in which four boys and four girls could be arranged for a series of dates. Maddy saw the jig, realized it was up, and called B.S. by responding to the question with, “I can’t answer this problem because my mom says acoording [sic] to girl code you shouldn’t date a friends x boyfriend.”

The story gained traction when Maddy’s mom Jenn Douglas posted the picture to HuffPost Parents’ Facebook page. Jenn told The Huffington Post that she was proud of her daughter’s answer, and wasn’t sure how appropriate it was to have a dating question on an assignment for young kids.

But Jenn said even her daughter’s teacher enjoyed the answer, and told her, “good point.”
