Leonardo DiCaprio finally got the overdue recognition he deserves.
The Revenant actor received the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role last night and admitted that the entire experience felt “surreal.” Leo told reporters, “I grew up in East Los Angeles. I was very close to the Hollywood studio system, but I felt detached from it my whole life. And to have had parents that have allowed me to be a part of this industry, to take me on auditions every day after school, and to tell stories like this has been my dream ever since I was 4 years old.”
Leo thanked all of his supporters, especially the fans on the internet that made memes in support of the six-time nominee: “Really, truly, [I’ve had support from] so many fans and so many people in the industry, it’s quite shocking, actually. And what can you say except I’m very grateful, I really am.” Congrats Leo!
Speaking of Leonardo DiCaprio’s triumphant night, he broke more records on Sunday after his win became the most-tweeted minute of an Oscars telecast ever, beating the previous record of 255K per minute, set when Ellen DeGeneres shared her star-studded selfie from the 2014 Oscars.
DiCaprio’s win for The Revenant generated more than 440K tweets per minute.
Sam Smith was over the moon with joy when he received the Oscar for Best Original Song at Sunday’s big show; so much so that he stated he may be the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, but it looks as though someone else beat him to the punch.
There aren’t any openly gay male acting winners in Academy Awards history, but Smith is far from the first gay man to win an Academy Award. The list includes Elton John, Dustin Lance Black, and Bill Condon. Check out the full list of openly gay Oscar Winners here.
Kylie Minogue is not here for Kylie Jenner trying to trademark their shared first name.
According to reports, a firm representing the Australian pop star filed a notice of opposition to Jenner’s application last week, claiming that it would “dilute her brand” and that Jenner is a “secondary reality television personality” that has received criticism from disability rights groups and from African-American communities.
CNN reported last year that Jenner filed an application to trademark her name in May 2015 for “entertainment in the nature of providing information by means of a global computer network in the fields of entertainment, fashion and pop culture.” The battle of the Kylies begins.
Deadpool dominated the box office again this weekend with a domestic total that now stands at an estimated $285.6 million. Gods Of Egypt came in second. The $140 million budgeted feature only brought in $14 million.
The animated Kung Fu Panda 3 came in third place with $9 million, and the biblical drama Risen was fourth with $7 million.
